Security v. Assurance

For a Disciple of Christ there should be no doubt about Eternal life.  In John 10.28 Jesus said— “And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.”  Eternal security, eternal life or eternal salvation are one and the same. From the Bible we learn that the only kind of salvation God offers to mankind is eternal. In the famously quoted John 3.16 Jesus told Nicodemus— “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” God offers to completely save and give eternal life to anyone who responds to His invitation to trust Jesus.

What if I could lose my salvation? What this implies is that to lose your salvation, that keeping salvation also depended upon your personal efforts or actions to keep it, therefore earn it. In effect, a person who believes this is trusting in human works to save themselves. However, when we read Ephesians 2:8-9 we see that: For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. If you think it’s easier for God to love you when you’re good; secretly suspect that God chose you because you deserved it; or think some people’s behavior is so bad that God couldn’t possibly save them; then you don’t entirely understand grace— a free unearned gift.

It is Promised by Christ Himself! Some say, Yea, I understand that Christ may not cast me out, but I can cast myself out.  In John 6.37 Jesus made the promise that He would never cast out anyone who had trusted Him as Savior— “All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.” It is not in your power to get in or cast yourself out.

Those who are saved can know and be absolutely assured of their salvation. Nothing can undo what God has done.  Paul teaches this very concept in Romans 8.38-39— “For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Eternal life is not based on how you feel, but does God care for that too?  Does He care about your feelings?  Your assurances?  Many people mistake security for assurance. They are not one and the same. Assurance, Assurances, Reassurances all deal with emotion and immediacy. Notice again Paul said — “…I am persuaded…” He was convinced! John in 1 John 5:13 added with— “These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.”God doesn’t just love us, He tells us.  He doesn’t just promise eternal life, He reassures us constantly!

Why wouldn’t we do that same thing for those we say we love?
