Recovery

Spirit filled disciples go through all the same events and trials of this life as everyone else does.  The difference is the recovery time.  They do not stay down.  They refocus their attention on the big picture of God’s control and then depend on the Spirit more quickly.

How?  The mind that is set on the Spirit is one of life and peace Romans 8.6— For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.  Conversely, the mind not set on the Spirit is one of death.  The more carnal our thinking the more death-thinking we ascribe to.  It is death because it is a lie, therefore immediately quenching the Spirit and thereby cutting off our life source.  If we are spiritually minded then life is flowing through us, but if carnally minded…death.  Now, who can say they are never carnally minded?  The Apostle Paul even said he was in a battle of this sort and would be until the day he departed this life. He even said he longed to be done with this battle entirely. (2 Corinthians 5)

The war rages in our minds but the mind set on the Spirit and therefore spiritually minded recovers quicker than the one carnally set.

For instance:  A Spirit-filed disciple will have times of outrage and frustration at some injustice or perceived injustice done to them or others they love.  They may even have a bought with the thoughts of revenge…and may even take matters into their own hands.  But before too long they regain perspective.  They are refocused on Truth by the Spirit with such verses as 1 Peter 3.9 about not repaying evil for evil; and Romans 8.8 about all things working together for good.  They don’t deny the pain, they don’t deny the person’s guilt or involvement, they just choose to not become bitter and trust the Holy Spirit also has this under His control.

The recovery is dependent entirely upon the sensitivity one has to the Spirit’s promptings and conviction. If we are less sensitive (hardened) then we will not recognize the conviction and drawing of us to His side.  Instead, we may indeed choose to be temporarily bitter or feel justified in our reactions to others or in our mind. Normally this person will claim someone is “guilt-tripping” them when all along it is the Holy Spirit working from the inside.

This is why scripture study and understanding are so essential to the believer.  Without this information the Spirit has less of your positive memory to work with; while your flesh has enormous amounts of negativity to dwell on.  Spirit-filled disciples are not perfect, but they recognize the flesh and the difference between it and the Spirit.  We can be as unkind and insensitive as anyone else, but quick to apologize and move on.

None of this is possible without sensitivity to the Holy Spirit.  Ask God to heighten your sensitivity to His promptings.
